Every year about 4,000 horses leave racing. For many of these, life then becomes a lottery. Sadly, some are sold direct for slaughter. Others are sent to the sales ring. For horses in the sales, their fortunes will depend on temprament, looks and potential for retraining. Some are lucky and find a loving new home. Others are not, and find their way into the pet food chain, or the European meat trade. For those exported on the hoof, this may involve long journeys in terrible conditions until they are put out of their misery with varying degrees of barbarity.
